British Standard 8500 and European standard EN 206 restrict and control the choice of mix to give assurance that generally mixes will produce concrete of a required characteristic strength.

The choice of mix will be either:-

Standardized prescribed concrete
A concrete mix selected from a restricted range given in BS 8500, where the purchaser is to ensure that the concrete is not used where other aggressive chemicals are present in the ground.

Designated Concrete
A concrete mix selected from a restricted range given in BS 8500, where the producer must hold a current accredited product conformity certification approved to BS EN ISO 9001.
