The extraction of carboniferous limestone at Ewenny Quarry is believed to have commenced in the nineteenth century in association with the development of the Vale of Glamorgan Railway from Barry to Bridgend. With the subsequent provision of a rail link to the quarry a wider market was developed, including limestone flux for the iron and steel industry continuing until the 1960s. Limited coated road stone and concrete production was carried out at the site well into the 1970s. A modern planning permission was issued by the Vale of Glamorgan in February 1999, and full quarrying and concrete production resumed by Minimix Limited in the autumn of that year. Ewenny quarry is located on the south side of the village of Ewenny, a dormitory settlement about a mile south of Bridgend in the Vale of Glamorgan. The operation is well placed for access to the major road network, with route B4245 leading north to the A48 at Bridgend and thence to the M4 motorway as well as various A class roads. In recognition of its commitment to the maintenance of the environment, Minimix Limited has achieved registration by the BSI, certifying that Ewenny Quarry operates an Environmental Management System which complies with the requirements of BS EN ISO 14001:1996 for the extraction, production and processing of limestone aggregates for use in concrete, roadstone and construction products and the supply of ready mixed concrete. This has resulted from the introduction of an Environmental Management System set to achieve the objectives and targets laid down under the Company Environmental Policy.
